FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions

For the Patient:

1 How is the MRI fusion prostate biopsy done?
An MRI of the prostate is done. The MRI image is fused with a TRUS (trans-rectal ultrasound) image of the prostate. Under a general anaesthetic in theatre, tissue is taken with a needle through the perineal skin (between the skin and the anus).
2Is an MRI fusion prostate biopsy covered by medical aid?
The fusion of the MRI and ultrasound image is an extra cost not covered by medical aids, that is payable by the patient before the procedure.
3What is the benefit of an MRI fusion prostate biopsy compared to a TRUS (trans-rectal ultrasound) prostate biopsy?
MRI fusion prostate biopsy is done through the perineum and has a much lower risk of infection. MRI fusion prostate biopsy is more accurate than TRUS prostate biopsy.
4How long will I be in the hospital?
MRI fusion prostate biopsy is done as a day procedure.
5Do I have to stop any medication before the procedure?
Blood thinning medication must be stopped before the procedure. Consult your treating physician before the procedure to stop it safely for the appropriate number of days.
