MRI Fusion Prostate Biopsy
Information for Doctors

What is a MRI fusion prostate biopsy?

In a patient with a suspicion of prostate cancer a MRI can be done for a prostate biopsy indication.

If the MRI shows suspicious areas it is fused with a TRUS image and a targeted biopsy is done.

Who does the MRI fusion prostate biopsy?

Our technician brings the equipment to the hospital of choice, and the biopsy is done by the Doctor/Urologist who booked the procedure.

Is an MRI fusion prostate biopsy covered by medical aid?

The fusion of the MRI and ultrasound image is an extra cost that is not covered by medical aids, and is payable by the patient before the procedure.

Do we supply prostate biopsy needles?

We do have needles available if needed for your convenience.

How should the patient prepare for the procedure?

Stop anticoagulants as appropriate.
Perform a fleet enema on the day before the procedure.
